Cataracts is an age-related clouding of the lens and the most common eye disease in general. Your lens grows throughout your life, but has a limit as to size and thickness. Thus, the interior of the lens thickens increasingly, resulting in a type of cloudy haze. Metabolic changes in age or even injury may contribute to cataracts.
This process occurs in every human being at some point in the course of their life. Cataracts usually begins to affect one’s vison from the age of 60. Cataracts is noticeable by having a cloudy visual impression or a grey haze, reinforced diaphragm sensitivity and a sudden change of eyewear-lens strength.
Cataract surgery is the most common and most successful surgery in ophthalmic surgery – 15 million procedures are performed annually. In cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced by an artificial lens (lens replacement). Through the use of different lenses, existing refractive errors like short or long-sightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia can be corrected as well.
In a consultation incl. ophthalmic preliminary examination, we will examine your cataracts and elaborate on your surgical options. Treatment of cataracts is covered by medical aid – but, EyeLaser is a private practice. However, this in turn means that you will receive the most modern implants, you will be free of spectacles, and your surgery will commence without long waiting periods.
