Femto-LASIK suitability criteria

Your prescription should not have changed for at least twelve months before the procedure (ideally even longer) to be suitable for Femto-LASIK.

Healthy eyes are also essential. Diseases such as cataracts or retinal conditions simply do not allow treatment with Femto-LASIK.

If you have long-sightedness, a value of plus 4 is the maximum up to which you can have the procedure.

In the case of short-sightedness, the permitted value is minus 10.

We can treat corneal curvatures with Femto-LASIK up to a value of 6 dioptres.

One thing should be clear, however: Which method is best for a patient is determined solely by the doctor. He knows the patient and, above all, he knows the eye that needs to be treated. Accordingly, it is not always the diopter values alone that are the deciding factor.

How LASIK and Femto-LASIK work

The LASIK method for vision correction has been in practice since 1990. It is now the most commonly used method in laser surgery. The technique has even been approved for NASA astronauts and jet pilots of the Navy. The modern development is the Femto-LASIK method.

The Femto-LASIK procedure, also called All-Laser LASIK, is the modern evolution of LASIK surgery.

The conventional LASIK surgery method involves the surgeon cutting the cornea with a scalpel. This carries risks.

In Femto-LASIK surgery, the surgeon makes an incision using a high-precision femtosecond laser. The femtosecond laser cuts much more precise than the scalpel. This results in a thinner flap, saving more tissue.

This technique is safer, and the healing process is accelerated. It can also be used to treat greater visual defects.

You will notice immediately after the operation that you can see clearly through the thick tear film. However, you should keep the eye covered for the rest of the day. You will be able to see relatively well only hours after the surgery.

Femto-LASIK is the most advanced technology in laser eye surgery. It is our preferred and standard choice at EyeLaser. We use one of the most advanced femtosecond lasers on the market, the ZIEMER Leonardo da Vinci Z6 from Switzerland.

Advantages and disadvantages of Femto-LASIK

The advantages:

  • There are numerous scientific studies worldwide that prove the safety and excellent results.
  • Femto-LASIK can correct all visual defects including
  • Fast vision improvement: patients can return to everyday life just hours after the procedure.
  • Shorter treatment time: the procedure only takes a few minutes.
  • Post-corrections are very easy

Disadvantages:

  • The lenticule that the surgeon creates can shift.
  • During flap creation, the corneal nerves are cut, which can lead to increased dry eye.
  • Increased light sensitivity in the form of halos/glare and starbursts is possible.

Due to the continuous development of excimer laser technology, most side effects have become very rare.

Femto-LASIK risks

Due to the cutting of the flap during Femto-LASIK surgery, strange sensations in the eye may occur in the first days after the treatment. The regeneration of the cornea takes a few days to weeks.

A day after Femto-LASIK surgery, you may feel abnormal sensations in the eye such as burning or stinging.

The regeneration of the cornea with Femto-LASIK surgery only takes 2-3 days.

Femto-LASIK options and alternatives

If you are not suitable for LASIK or Femto-LASIK treatment, we can consider other treatments:

LASIK and Femto-LASIK scientific research

The Femto-LASIK procedure is scientifically recognised and has been confirmed in numerous scientific studies.

LASIK has been in use since 1991 and more than 50 million treatments have been performed worldwide.
This procedure is scientifically recognised and has been confirmed in numerous scientific studies. Nevertheless, in order to achieve good results, a thorough preliminary examination, the choice of the safest, most modern technology and the appropriate laser programming are of particular importance.

The highest safety criteria should be followed after each procedure and the leading doctor should be contacted in case of any doubt after the treatment.

Femto-LASIK steps

The FEMTO-LASIK preparation

We first disinfect your facial area. You will receive a local anaesthetic in the form of eye drops. The surgeon will gently fix your eyelids open using a special device. They will then ask you to look at the green light above you throughout the operation. All this is entirely symptom-free and painless.

The incision with the Femtosecond-Laser

The eye surgeon makes an incision in the cornea with a femtosecond laser to produce a 0.1 mm thin lid – the flap. The surgeon folds the flap back carefully. You may feel a slight pressure on the eye, and it may become dark for a short while.

The correction with the Excimer laser

Now, the eye surgeon uses the Excimer laser. With a computer-controlled laser, the exposed cornea is reshaped in a few seconds to compensate for the refractive error. The surgeon monitors the use of the laser through a microscope.

The completion

In the final step, the surgeon folds the flap back. It will adapt itself and form a protection for the cornea.

To protect your eye against environmental factors, we may fit temporary contact lenses. We will remove these the following day.
