Discover everything you need to know about refractive lens exchange

Lens replacement suitability criteria

Lens replacement: replacing your lens with an artificial lens

Refractive lens exchange is used primarily in patients with cataracts with coexisting severe nearsightednessfarsightedness, or presbyopia and astigmatism.

How lens replacement works

We remove the natural lens through a small incision on the cornea. We then insert the new artificial lens, which is made of compatible plastic (acrylate).

We will determine which lens surgery method is best for you in a personal consultation and examination with a specialist.

Lens replacement risks

Risks & side effects

The chances of success with refractive lens exchange are generally considered to be very high and reliable. Nevertheless, there are general surgical risks, which all patients need to be aware of.

Break free from the hassle of reading glasses if you’re over 45

After 40, most of us need reading glasses (even if we’ve never needed glasses before!) Freedom from reading glasses is possible but not everyone’s eyes can be treated. Book an assessment below to find out if you’re suitable for reading glasses treatment:

Lens replacement steps

Preparation

In preparation for the operation, we will dilate the pupil with medication. This takes about 30 minutes. Afterwards, the eye is well anaesthetised using eye drops (drip anaesthesia) and disinfected. During the operation, the patient lies flat on the operating table. The surgeon covers the eye with an air-permeable sterile cloth and fits a small clamp to prevent you from blinking during the operation.

Removing the lens

In the first step, the surgeon makes a small (2.2 – 2.4 mm) incision at the edge of the cornea. They then open the lens capsule and liquify the cloudy lens using ultrasound (phacoemulsification). The surgeon then suctions the old lens out.

Insertion of an artificial lens

The surgeon then replaces the old lens with a new artificial lens using an injector. Afterwards, the surgeon removes all substances used during the operation and closes the wounds.

Postoperative phase

After the operation, the surgeon applies a protective shield to the eye to protect it from environmental influences such as dirt and dust. This enables the incision to heal well. You must use eye drops to prevent inflammation from occurring.
